Ah, it's the age old and most dreaded interview question isn't it? It's often hard to think of a list of successful people that you base your whole work or life structure on off the top of your head. Many people who are asked this question, or who have asked themselves it don't know where to begin and often start up in a panic and just end up in confusion. Some people, however, know exactly who their prolific muses are and why and some people also have influences for different aspects of their lives. However you discover who inspires you, it's important to choose wisely.
So why are having influences important? As humans, we are constantly taking from what we know, what we read and what we discover to draw ideas from. From scientists to philosophers and even a piece of art, it's great to have someone, something or a group of people to create your own goals and make educated decisions. You don't need to compare yourself to anyone but it's gives you drive to know that someone out there has been successful in the field we wish to go into or someone who we think has great life morals. Influences are important because having an idea is great but it's about how you go about empowering those thought processes to come to fruition...and that's where influences come in. Here are three of my many influences - known and unknown - that have a profound effect on my life and goals.
The Famous One
This one is always hard because there are so many actors, musicians and artists thrust into my daily life through magazines and TV and there are so many to draw on from history. I find it helped to take a time out and think back to who I may have admired when I was younger. So, I trekked through my Facebook pages, waded through Google and raided my film collection to find the most suitable famous influence but couldn't find just one. The one major aspect that ran through these findings was a love of things that make me laugh. I've always been brought up with comedy and surrounded myself with funny people and in my naive eyes, comedy can never be negative. I don't think I could get through life without humour so I suppose anybody that's working or has worked in comedy is an influence on me. If I had to pin it down to one thing, it would be the film The Jerk starring Steve Martin - that film will always have a direct positive effect on me.
The Strange One
I only read Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer/The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a few months ago so it's still very fresh in my mind. The books were full of mishaps, mayhem and friendship and the things I learnt from the books was embrace youth and get out of your comfort zone; to take risks and to simply just have fun. The quote from Mr. Twain in the front page of the book has always stuck with me: "...part of my plan has been to try pleasantly to remind adults of what they once were themselves...and what queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in." It's not everyone's cup of tea but I'm a big believer that kids should always be allowed to be kids - messy, noisy, inquisitive and adventurous. The books have inspired me to work more with children and help them to develop their natural talents and learn to explore their imaginations.
The Personal One
Everybody feels their mother is special and it's always nice to mention the person that brought you into this world and looked after you. I was raised by a single mother who worked two jobs to support us as kids. She always made sure we were clothed, educated and fed and she gave up most of her life to look after us. I'm eternally grateful to her and she makes me want to be a better person because of her selfless efforts.
If you think about a family member, a friend, colleague or someone who isn't in the media; as well as a famous actor or artist, the question of who influences you becomes easier to think about and gives more scope and substance to people who work hard at what they do but don't necessarily get the credit.
Do you know someone who always has big ideas but spends most of their time working to create the means or funding to carry them out? Do you know a relative or friend who works hard at their job? How about a counsellor or volunteer helping out in the community? Maybe the local fireman, doctor or policeman down the road who works tirelessly to save lives and look after our neighbourhoods?
Next time you're in a panic over the question of who inspires you, stop to take a look around you because they may be closer to home than you think.
